The Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department kicked off thier annual fire Prevention Week activities on Sunday October 9. The firefighters welcomed seventy-six kids and adults who visited the fire department that afternoon. Stickers and brochures dealing with fire prevention were distributed. Safety videos were played for the visitors to watch, and refreshments were available at the sign-in table. The kids had a good time sitting in the fire truck blowing the air horn, hodling the hose, shooting water at one of the junior firefighters, or listening to firefighters tell about what they do when on the job.
Nineteen firefighters, junior firefighters and support personnel showed up to assist in the afternoon fun. A special thanks to each one of them who took the time to be there:
The kids received plastic firefighter helmets and a smoke detective badge with a reminder that now is a good time to check the battery in their family's smoke detectors. Eric and Sunnie Godbey visited the school classes during fire prevention week to talk to the kids about fire safety.
STAY SAFE!
Every house should have at least two exits in case of a fire. Do you live in a two or more story house? Every floor should have an exit besides the interior stairway. You should consider having a foldable ladder that could be put out an upstairs window, in case a fire has blocked the main exit. Taking action now could save a life in the future. If you need assistance in devising an escape plan from your house, feel free to get in touch with the fire department.
Finally, every house on the island needs to have large reflective house numbers near the road in front of the house. This is not only in the case of a fire, but also if there is a need for the EMS to locate your home. If your house is on fire, the fire department will probably be able to find you. If the EMS is looking for your house and there is no number easily seen, their response time may be longer than it should be. Your life could depend on those house numbers being readily seen. Some of our EMS members are from off the island and are not familiar with the community. House numbers are very important as are street signs being in place. If your street doesn’t have a street sign, notify Darlene Styron, our commissioner, about getting a sign in place. Please STAY SAFE!
