The Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department is always in need of additional members. As times change and the community grows, the need for volunteers is ever increasing. The OVFD offers 3 types of membership:
Regular Members
Regular members are the firefighters. If you are interested in becoming a firefighter, you will be trained in the use of all equipment and the art and science of firefighting. You must attend a total of 36 hours per year of fire department meeting/training sessions. Complete personal protective clothing will be issued as well as insurance coverage while you are on durty as a certified member.
Junior Members
Junior members are firefighters in training and are the future of the OVFD. If you are interested in becoming a junior member, you will be trained in the use of our firefighting equipment and answer all emergency calls. As a junior member, you are not permitted to fight fires until you would be eligible for regular membership but you are permitted to help out with the equipment at the scene. Complete personal protective clothing will be issued as well as insurance coverage while you are on duty as a member. You must be at least 13 years old and attend a total of 36 hours per year of fire department meeting/trianing sessions.
Support Members
Support members consist of people from the community who would like to become members of the OVFD and not actually fight fires. There are many areas in which you can participate in the operation of the fire department. Some examples are:
- Supporting the regular firefighters at a fire scene
- Assisting with medivacs and other emergencies
- Building and equipment maintenance
- Helping with fire department fundraisers, bingo, record keeping, grant application writing and more
As a support member, with the exception of clerical members, you will receive complete training of our fire fighting equipment and will answer emergency calls. You will also be issued a jumpsuit, helmet, gloves and safety goggles. In addition, you will be fully covered by insurance while on duty.
